[International Cooperation][Aerospace Technology] Taiwan Participates in the Construction of Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (
Chinese Version)
CNA News (2010/02/13) The first high energy particle detector in the outer space “Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS)” is about to run the vacuum test in the space. Several research institutes in Taiwan have played significant roles in the test.
AMS Laboratory, led by the Nobel Laureate in Physics, present professor in MIT, Samuel Chao Chung TING, aims at sending a detector to the International Space Station (ISS) by space shuttle, spending three years detecting the space radiation on its orbit. This is believed to be very helpful with understanding the antimatter and dark matter. In the CERN newsletter, Chao Chung TING points out that the present task is a very important milestone of AMS, because this is the first vacuum test of the detector. Afterwards, the detector will be brought back to CERN for final check before sent to Kennedy Space Center (KSC).
According to CERN, institutes from 15 countries participate in the project, including those from France, Germany, Italy, Portugal, Span, Switzerland, China, Taiwan, and the US. The institutes from Taiwan include Institute of Physics (Academia Sinica), Chung-shan Institute of Science and Technology, National Central University, National Cheng Kung University, National Chiao Tung University, and National Space Organization. Most of the electronic equipment is produced in Chung-shan Institute of Science and Technology. The trigger system through which the main computer receives the signals detected is designed, produced, and tested by Academia Sinica, National Central University, Chun-shan Institute of Science and Technology and MIT. Chun-shan Institute of Science and Technology and National Space Organization take charge in thermal model analysis. Besides, Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (漢翔) produces the ground large supportive equipment such as heat sinks.
